Routy

Clicks Blocked: Invalid Destination URL

Real visitors are clicking one of your links, but Routy could not build a usable destination address for it, so the clicks are being turned away.

What it means

When a link is clicked, Routy builds the final address from the link's destination URL and your tracking values. If that address comes out empty, or still contains a placeholder that was never filled in, Routy does not send the visitor there. The visitor gets an error page and the click is not recorded.

Why it happens

  • The link has no destination URL.
  • The destination URL contains a placeholder that has no value. Placeholders look like [%name%]. One that is misspelled, or that refers to a value your link does not supply, stays in the address unfilled.
  • The partner's URL contains square brackets around an encoded value, such as [%7Bclickid%7D]. Routy can mistake this for one of its own unfilled placeholders and block the click. If your destination URL looks like this, contact support.

What you can do

  1. Open the link from the issue in Routy Links and look at its destination URL.
  2. If it is empty, add the destination URL from the partner.
  3. If it contains a [%...%] placeholder, check the spelling, and check that the value it refers to is set on the link or its tracker. Remove placeholders you do not need.
  4. If the URL contains a partner macro in square brackets and nothing else looks wrong, contact support with the link and the issue's first-detected date.

When it clears

On its own, 1 day after the last blocked click. Fixing the link does not close the issue at that moment, so you can press Resolve once you have fixed it. If clicks are still being blocked, it opens again with the next one. A burst of blocked clicks is reported at most once an hour, and search engine crawlers never trigger it.
